Dear Colleagues
Greetings from Medanta - Medicity, Gurgaon!
It is our pleasure to announce the First Nephrology Update for physicians to be held at Pride Plaza
Aerocity, Delhi on 3rd May 2020.
Kidney diseases are increasing in epidemic fashion now a days. According to recent US data approximately 10% Americans
suffer from some form of chronic kidney disease and as CKD is a progressive disease, many of them would eventually
develop end stage kidney disease ( ESRD). The treatment of ESRD is both difficult and expensive throughout the world. In
India, the exact prevalence of CKD is not known, however the figure should not be different from US as diabetes is very
common in Indians and the most common cause of ESRD is diabetes worldwide as well in India. In India about 2-2.5 lacs
new patients develop ESRD/year, means they would need either dialysis or kidney transplant to sustain their life, and sadly
most patients cannot afford that treatment.
We know that prevention is better than cure and this is very true in a disease like CKD, where early diagnosis and timely
intervention can significantly delay the progression or prevent the CKD. The most common causes of CKD in India are
diabetes and hypertension which are primarily handled by physicians, so the role of physicians in managing these
conditions and early stages of CKD cannot be underestimated. As we know the exposure to Nephrology as a subject is very
poor during MD as well as in regular meetings.
This Update is designed to fill this gap and update their knowledge about common kidney diseases, which will help to
improve the management of patients with kidney diseases encountered in day to day practice. The nephrology update
would also provide an opportunity for physicians to interact with renowned experts in the field of Nephrology, and to clarify
doubts as meeting is designed in such a way that it will provide ample time for discussion.
To fulfil this task, we have invited renowned faculty in the field of Nephrology from the best institutes in
India. Prof. Vivekanand Jha, is former professor of Nephrology at PGI Chandigarh and present president of
International society of Nephrology, Prof. M M Rajapurkar is the former President Indian society of
